Wat Sa Ket

About this Place

Wat Sa Ket is an ancient temple built before the Ayutthaya period, originally named Wat Sao Thong Hin. It is located on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, about 15 kilometers from Ang Thong Mueang District, in the area of Chaiyaphum Subdistrict, which was formerly Ban Sa Ket. There is a historical story about King Naresuan the Great who led his army to drive out the enemy to Chaiyo village and won victory, thus naming it Chaiyo village. After repelling the enemy, he rested his troops at Wat Sao Thong Hin to bathe their heads ('Song Kesa') at this temple, hence later calling it "Wat Sa Ket" from that time onwards. In 2513 BE (1970 AD), His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen visited Wat Sa Ket to perform religious ceremonies honoring King Naresuan the Great. Wat Sa Ket currently consists of various buildings and monastic dwellings, including an ordination hall that was renovated in 2506 BE (1963 AD) with a reinforced concrete structure. It has a spacious assembly hall, 15 meters wide and 26 meters long, built in 2519 BE (1976 AD) as a concrete building. There are 5 monks' quarters, which are wooden buildings. The cemetery is 12 meters wide and 20 meters long. Currently, this temple has been granted the Simas (consecrated boundary) since 2320 BE (1777 AD). The Simas area is 10 meters wide and 22.50 meters long. This temple also has a public primary school located within its grounds.
