Kham Yat Royal Residence (Phra Tamnak Kham Yat)

Kham Yat Royal Residence is a historical site standing amidst scenic fields in Pho Thong District, Ang Thong Province. Built during the Late Ayutthaya period, this brick-and-plaster structure measures 10 meters wide by 20 meters long and retains striking architectural details such as pointed archways and decorative window niches. It served as a residence for King Uthumphon and holds deep historical ties to regional events during the Late Ayutthaya era.

About this Place

History & Significance

Kham Yat Royal Residence was a temporary residence for King Uthumphon (also known as Khun Luang Hao Wat), the 32nd or 33rd monarch of the Ban Phlu Luang Dynasty of Ayutthaya. According to historical records, King Uthumphon stayed at this residence before returning to Wat Pradu Song Tham. During a royal visit in 1908 (B.E. 2451), King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) analyzed the site and surmised that the residence may have originally been constructed during the reign of King Borommakot as a royal pavilion for travels in the region, similar to Bang Pa-In Palace. King Uthumphon later resided here while ordained, gathering loyal supporters in connection with the villagers of Bang Rachan.

Highlights & What to See

The primary structure stands prominently in an open field, measuring 10 meters wide by 20 meters long. While the roof and upper timber structure no longer remain, all four surrounding brick and plaster walls stand intact. Key architectural features include:

  • Elevated Basement & Pointed Arches: Raised basement with pointed arched openings underneath, a style popular since the reign of King Narai the Great.
  • Ornate Window Niches: Decorative moldings surrounding the window arches.
  • Porch Extensions: Porch features (Muk Det) projecting from both the front (east side) and back of the building.
  • Interior Finishing: Traces of red earth paint on interior walls where wooden floorboards were originally laid.
