About this Place
History & Significance
Wat Ban Phran is an ancient temple of the Maha Nikaya order with a long and fascinating history. According to historical records and local lore passed down by Luang Pu Chai Mongkhon of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, the site was originally established around 1684 BE. It was built between 1862 and 1870 BE during the late Sukhothai era by a couple named Nai Phan and Nang Ngoen, together with their son, Nai Krapuk Thong.
Following its initial era, the temple was abandoned for over a century and became heavily overgrown. Later, local hunters and settlers formed a community in the area and collaboratively restored the grounds. The temple officially received its consecrated boundary (Wisungkhamsima) on July 31, 1951 (2494 BE).
Highlights & What to See
The primary sacred object at the temple is Luang Pho Krai Thong, a revered sandstone Buddha sculpture depicted in the meditation posture (Pang Samadhi). According to traditional accounts, the statue was originally crafted under King Sri Indraditya in Sukhothai and transported in sections to be assembled at Wat Ban Phran.
The statue is enshrined inside the Viharn Luang Pho Krai Thong, a striking Chinese-style pavilion (Keng Chin) designed to resemble a junk ship. This unique Rattanakosin-era structure honors the traditional Chinese sailing vessel believed to have carried the revered Buddha image to the temple.
