Wat Muang is believed to have been established around 1687 (2230 B.E.) during the late Ayutthaya period in Wiset Chai Chan, a town that once flourished as a strategic frontier outpost. Spanning approximately 72 rai, this historic temple has grown into a major spiritual landmark in Ang Thong Province.

The temple complex boasts several remarkable attractions and sacred monuments:

  • Luang Pho Yai (Phra Phuttha Maha Nawamin Sakayamuni Si Wiset Chai Chan): A majestic golden Buddha image in the Mara-vijaya posture, measuring 63 meters wide at the lap and 95 meters in height, standing visible from great distances across the surrounding plains.
  • Lotus Petal Ubosot: The main ordination hall is distinctly enclosed by massive pink stucco lotus petals. Inside, visitors can admire detailed mural paintings depicting the life story of the Buddha.
  • Wihan Kaeo (Glass Viharn): An exquisitely adorned mirror-tiled sanctuary featuring religious displays.
  • Museum & Statues: The complex houses a museum of sacred amulets and historical antiques, along with life-sized statues of revered Buddhist masters from across Thailand, as well as Chinese and Brahmin deities.
