Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Center

Located within the grounds of Wat Tha Suthawat in Ang Thong, the Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Center is a royal initiative established in 1976 by Queen Sirikit. This center serves as a learning hub and cooperative where local villagers demonstrate the delicate art of molding miniature clay dolls. Visitors can observe the crafting process, learn to mold their own clay creations, and purchase these beautiful, culturally rich souvenirs.

About this Place

History & Significance

The tradition of court dolls (Tukta Chaowang) dates back to the Rattanakosin era inside the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Originally created during the reign of King Rama IV or King Rama V, these miniature clay dolls were highly favored by royal children. Over time, the art form faced a decline due to the popularity of Western dolls. In 1976, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, initiated the Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Project in Pa Mok District, Ang Thong Province. This royal project aimed to revive this dying heritage while providing supplementary income for local villagers. Today, the project operates as a cooperative, exporting these exquisite handicrafts worldwide.

Highlights & What to See

The center is housed in a beautiful two-story Thai-style wooden building. On the ground floor, visitors can watch live demonstrations of local artisans meticulously molding clay into tiny, detailed figures. The dolls depict traditional Thai lifestyles, folk games, traditional Thai orchestras (Mahori Piphat), Thai proverbs, and various Thai fruits. Visitors and interested tourists can also participate in hands-on learning sessions to try molding clay dolls themselves, gaining a deeper appreciation for this delicate craft.
