History & Significance

Wat Khao Suwan Pradit was originally called Wat Khao Lan because it was established on an open, bare hilltop. Local villagers believed the hill was protected by Pho Than Yot Khao, a guardian deity of the mountain and surrounding territory. The temple was founded in 1917 by Ajahn Thong, a respected monk from Songkhla Province who served as its first abbot. Later, Phra Ratcha Rattanakawi, the former Ecclesiastical Provincial Governor of Surat Thani, renamed it Wat Khao Suwan Pradit, an auspicious name translating to 'the temple built by Ajahn Thong on the mountain'. The temple received royal granting of Wisungkhamsima boundary status on July 31, 1953, with formal consecration ceremonies completed in 1957.

Highlights & What to See

The temple grounds offer several significant sacred sites and viewing areas:

  • Mondop of Luang Por Joi: Houses the intact, uncorrupted body of Phra Khru Suwanpraditkan (Luang Por Joi), a renowned southern Thai master monk who passed away in 1993, resting inside a glass casket for public veneration.
  • Hilltop Chaturamuk Chedi: A prominent four-gabled stupa on the mountain peak enshrining sacred Buddha relics (Phra Borommasaririkthat).
  • Panoramic Viewpoint: An open courtyard surrounding the chedi and a viewpoint pavilion offering expansive vistas over Don Sak estuary, Laem Thuat, Koh Raet, Koh Nok Phao, and Koh Samui.
  • Monument of Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit: Located near the inner archway gate of the temple.
  • Sacred Artifacts: The temple also preserves an Ayutthaya-period metal principal Buddha statue, an adorned royal Buddha statue, a replica of the Buddha footprint, and statues honoring three former abbots.
