About this Place
History & Significance
Wat Khao Suwan Pradit was originally called Wat Khao Lan because it was established on an open, bare hilltop. Local villagers believed the hill was protected by Pho Than Yot Khao, a guardian deity of the mountain and surrounding territory. The temple was founded in 1917 by Ajahn Thong, a respected monk from Songkhla Province who served as its first abbot. Later, Phra Ratcha Rattanakawi, the former Ecclesiastical Provincial Governor of Surat Thani, renamed it Wat Khao Suwan Pradit, an auspicious name translating to 'the temple built by Ajahn Thong on the mountain'. The temple received royal granting of Wisungkhamsima boundary status on July 31, 1953, with formal consecration ceremonies completed in 1957.
