This is the first multipurpose dam built with concrete. The dam's crest is a large arc, making it the tallest dam in Thailand, with a height of 154 meters from base to crest. It was built to impound the Ping River at Khao Kaeo, Sam Ngao District, for electricity generation and irrigation. The Ping River from the dam to Hot District, Chiang Mai Province, is 207 kilometers long. The area around Bhumibol Dam is a recreational spot and a fish breeding ground.

- Phra Phutthabat Doi Khao Nam is an island in the Bhumibol Dam reservoir. It has a temple on the mountain, Wat Phra Phutthabat. Inside the temple are the Buddha's footprint, a glass Buddha footprint, and a pavilion housing the main Buddha image. The surrounding area offers beautiful scenery.
- Valentine Island is a small island with a sandy beach suitable for swimming. You can visit Valentine Island and Phra Phutthabat by renting a boat from Bhumibol Dam, taking about 30 minutes. There are also raft tours by tugboat or cruise ship through various tourist attractions, including Phra Phutthabat Khao Nam, Valentine Island, Doi Chao Pho Luang, Khao Phra Phutthabat, Tham Aab Nang, and the ancient site of Kaeng Soi, continuing to Doi Tao in Chiang Mai Province, covering a total distance of 204 kilometers.
