About this Place
History & Significance
Wat Phra That Pha Ngao is located in Ban Sop Kham, Wiang Sub-district, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, covering an area of 743 rai. According to the Yonok Chronicle, Khun Pha Phing (the 23rd ruler of the Yonok Kingdom, who ruled around 494–512 BE) built a chedi on a large boulder at the foot of Doi Chan hill, which is believed to be the original Phra That Pha Ngao. Later, during 996–1007 BE, Khun Lang, the ruler of Wiang Poeksa (modern-day Chiang Saen), led the citizens to build Phra That Chom Chan and Phra That Chet Yot on the hills. Over the centuries, these structures fell into ruin due to natural elements, leaving only 5-meter bases.
The temple was originally named Wat Sop Kham but was renamed after a historic discovery on March 17, 1976, at 14:00. While clearing the land, workers excavated a remarkably beautiful Buddha image. Experts estimated its age to be between 700 and 1,300 years. The image was named "Luang Pho Pha Ngao" (meaning "shadow of the cliff"), and the temple was renamed Wat Phra That Pha Ngao in its honor.
