About this Place

History & Significance

Wat Phra Narai Maharat Worawihan was established during the Ayutthaya period under the royal order of King Narai the Great. Located at the center of Nakhon Ratchasima's historic walled city adjacent to the City Pillar Shrine, it was historically referred to as "Wat Klang" or "Wat Klang Nakhon." The temple played a crucial role in civic and royal traditions, serving as the venue for the Thue Nam Phiphat Sattaya oath-taking ceremony where officials pledged loyalty, as well as for consecrating sacred water for royal coronation rites. Additionally, the northwest corner of the temple formerly housed the monument containing the relics of Thao Suranari until they were relocated to Chumphon Gate in 1934.

Highlights & What to See

  • Phra Viharn Luang & Luang Pho Yai: Recognized as the largest Viharn in the Northeast (Isan), Phra Viharn Luang houses "Luang Pho Yai" (officially named Phra Thossapol Yan Prathan Barami), a large Subduing Mara Buddha statue resting on a 3.14-meter pedestal, measuring 4 meters wide across the lap and 5.3 meters in total height. Originally built alongside the city, the Viharn was rebuilt after being destroyed in 1826 and restored again following a grant of 400 Baht from Queen Sri Bajarindra.
  • Ubosot in the Lotus Pond: Located on an island in the lotus pond on the eastern side, the current Ubosot was rebuilt over its original foundation. Its design features a three-tiered gabled roof. The eastern pediment depicts Lord Vishnu riding Garuda, while the western pediment portrays Lord Indra riding the Erawan elephant. The building is surrounded by eight replica boundary stones.
  • Sandstone Vishnu Statue: A sacred ancient Khmer-style sandstone carving of a four-armed Vishnu (Phra Narai), symbolizing the royal founder of the temple.
