About this Place

History & Significance

Waroros Market has a deep historical significance dating back over a hundred years. The site was originally known as "Khuang Meru," serving as a royal cremation ground and ash repository for Chiang Mai's ruling princes. Princess Dara Rasami, royal consort of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), initiated moving the royal ashes to Wat Suan Dok for appropriate preservation. Subsequently, a market was established on the grounds during the reign of Chao Inthawaroros Suriyawong, the ruler of Chiang Mai, and named "Waroros Market" in his honor around 1910. Locals commonly call it "Kad Luang," which translates to "Great Market" or "Lord's Market." Historically managed in its early days by Mr. Arthur Lionel Queripel, an Englishman, it was once celebrated as the most modern market in Thailand. After a major fire destroyed the market on February 13, 1968, it was rebuilt and officially reopened on March 19, 1972.
