About this Place
History & Significance
Thao Suranari, affectionately known as 'Ya Mo' (Grandmother Mo), was born in 1771 and passed away in April 1852 at the age of 81. She is celebrated in Thai history for her heroic role in liberating Nakhon Ratchasima from the occupying army of King Anouvong of Vientiane in 1826. When the invading forces captured the city and swept local residents away as captives, Ya Mo devised a clever plan to delay the march. On March 4, 1826, at Thung Samrit, she led the captive men and women to fight back against the soldiers, successfully reclaiming the city. In recognition of her bravery, King Rama III bestowed upon her the noble title 'Thao Suranari' on October 30, 1827.
Highlights & What to See
The monument features a 1.85-meter-tall statue of Thao Suranari, weighing 325 kilograms, cast in dark-brown copper. Designed by the renowned Italian-born sculptor Professor Silpa Bhirasri in collaboration with Phra Devabhinimit, she is depicted standing in her royal-bestowed uniform, holding a sword in her right hand with the tip pointing to the ground, and her left hand resting on her waist. The statue faces west towards Bangkok. Her ashes are enshrined within the twelve-indented corner pedestal beneath the statue.
Directly behind the monument stands the historic Chumphon Gate (Pratu Chumphon). This ancient city gate is constructed from large stones and bricks, topped with a wooden watchtower and a tiled roof, serving as a powerful backdrop to the monument.
If you visit between March 23 and April 3, you can witness the annual Thao Suranari Victory Celebration held in front of the provincial hall, featuring vibrant local festivities.
