About this Place

History & Significance

Indigo-dyed fabric (Pha Khram) is a highly celebrated traditional craft in Thailand's Northeast (Isan) region, with Sakon Nakhon being its premier hub. The local craft involves using natural indigo plants to dye cotton threads before hand-weaving them on traditional looms. This traditional process has been passed down through generations, earning Sakon Nakhon's indigo fabric a Geographical Indication (GI) status. Today, local artisans combine ancient techniques like Mudmee (ikat) with modern methods such as tie-dyeing and batik to create contemporary patterns and colors.

Highlights & What to See

The street comes alive with a wide array of indigo-dyed products. Visitors can browse and purchase ready-to-wear clothing, fabric rolls, shawls, scarves, bags, keychains, accessories, and various souvenirs. Beyond shopping, the market offers engaging live demonstrations of the indigo-dyeing process, allowing visitors to see how the natural blue hues are created. The atmosphere is further enhanced by traditional local folk music performances played by local artists.
