About this Place
History & Significance
Sakaerat Environmental Research Station was established as a center for environmental and ecological research in tropical forests. In 1976, it achieved historic recognition as Thailand's very first Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Today, it operates under the supervision of the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. It has also been a key site for discovering new species, such as the lacewing insect Coniocompsa nabhitabhatai (discovered in 2002) and the mite Trichogalumna nabhitabhatai (discovered in 2008), both named in honor of the prominent Thai biologist Dr. Jarujin Nabhitabhata.
Highlights & What to See
The station is home to various small wildlife species, including wild boars, jungle fowls, and Siamese firebacks. One of the main highlights is the observation tower; climbing to the top, above the tree canopy, offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the vast green forest and the distant Khao Phaeng Ma. The area enjoys a cool and comfortable climate throughout the year. For nature enthusiasts, there are several nature study trails ranging from 1.5 to 3 hours. It is also an excellent spot for studying nocturnal insects and stargazing.
