About this Place

History & Significance

Phu Phrabat Historical Park showcases human cultural development spanning over 3,000 to 2,500 years, from the late Metal Age through the Dvaravati, Lopburi, Lan Xang, and Rattanakosin periods. On July 27, 2024, UNESCO inscribed the site on the World Heritage list under the title 'Phu Phrabat, a testimony to the Sīma stone tradition of the Dvaravati period.' It represents one of the largest concentrations of sacred Dvaravati Sīma boundary stones in the world, illustrating how natural geological features were adapted into sacred ritual spaces.

Highlights & What to See

The park is filled with fascinating geological and historical structures:

  • Ho Nang Usa (Nang Usa's Tower): A striking natural rock shelter balanced on a narrow pillar, famously associated with the northeastern Thai folklore of Nang Usa and Thao Baros.
  • Prehistoric Rock Paintings: Red paint artworks and engravings found across more than 54 rock shelters and caves throughout the park.
  • Phra Phutthabat Bua Bok: A revered Buddha footprint enshrined within a lotus-shaped chedi built between 1920 and 1934 (2463–2477 BE). The footprint basin measures 60 centimeters deep, 1.93 meters long, and 90 centimeters wide.
  • Phra Phutthabat Lang Tao: A 25-centimeter-deep rock-carved footprint featuring a sharp-petaled lotus design, located near a natural rock formation shaped like a turtle shell.
  • Wat Pho Ta & Wat Luk Khye: Natural rock shelters containing Dvaravati-style sandstone Buddha images and carved boundary stones.
