Nakhonban Phetchabun Cultural Hall (WWII Capital Memorial)

Nakhonban Phetchabun Cultural Hall is a dedicated historical memorial and museum commemorating Thailand's wartime plan to relocate its national capital to Phetchabun during World War II, highlighted by a giant golden tamarind pod sculpture.

About this Place

Situated in the historic core of Mueang Phetchabun opposite the City Pillar Shrine, Nakhonban Phetchabun Cultural Hall preserves one of the most intriguing and pivotal chapters in modern Thai history.

Constructed in 2003, the memorial hall honors the establishment of 'Nakhonban Phetchabun' (Metropolitan Phetchabun). Between 1943 and 1945 (B.E. 2486–2488), during the height of the Pacific War, Prime Minister Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram enacted a royal decree to strategically relocate the kingdom's capital, ministries, military headquarters, and national treasury from Japanese-occupied Bangkok to the mountainous redoubt of Phetchabun.

Key exhibits and features include:

  • Golden Giant Tamarind Sculpture: An eye-catching monumental golden tamarind pod erected in the outdoor courtyard, celebrating Phetchabun's heritage as Thailand's sweet tamarind capital.
  • Wartime Capital Exhibitions: Rare archival photographs, historical documents, government proclamations, and personal artifacts from the military and administrative migration to the Phetchabun valley.
  • Antiquities & Regional Heritage: Archaeological artifacts and traditional lifestyle displays curated in collaboration with the Fine Arts Department.
  • Cultural Performing Arts Plaza: An open-air auditorium and courtyard hosting regional folk festivals, traditional theater, and community cultural gatherings.
