タムボン・タラートに位置し、元々は北寺（ワット・ヌア）と呼ばれていました。マハーサーラカーム県に古くからある王室寺院です。ラマ4世時代の西暦1865年に、マハーサーラカーム県初代知事のチャルンラートデチャ（クワット）氏とマハーサーラカーム県民が協力して、約16,000平方メートルの敷地に建立しました。初代住職はプラヤー・クルー・スワンナディー・シンサンコンでした。後に1929年、18代住職のプラサートカーカムムニー（サラパプータノン）氏が、「北寺」から「マハーチャイ寺院」への改名を申請しました。
寺院内の見どころは、東北地方文化センター、または地方博物館です。ここは、元住職のプラリアヌワット・ケムチャリ氏が各地から収集した貴重な歴史的価値のある品々を保管・展示する場所です。これらには、古代文書（経典、クメール文字、ラオ文字、タイ・ノイ文字の貝葉文書など）、古代の石碑（ラテライト製およびストゥーパ形式のもの）、古代の壺、そして古代仏像などが含まれます。
毎日午前9時から午後4時まで開館しています。
