About this Place

History & Significance

The King Taksin the Great Shrine was established in 1947 (B.E. 2490) by the Fine Arts Department to honor King Taksin the Great (April 17, 1734 – April 6, 1782). Originally named Sin, he was a prominent military officer during the late Ayutthaya period. Following the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, he successfully led forces to expel the Burmese occupiers, reunified the fragmented nation, and established Thonburi as the new capital. He ruled as the sole monarch of the Thonburi Kingdom for 15 years. Because of his immense contributions, the Thai government designated December 28 of every year as King Taksin Day.

Highlights & What to See

The main highlight of the shrine is the life-sized bronze statue of King Taksin the Great, sculpted and cast by the Fine Arts Department. The statue depicts the King in a seated posture on his royal throne, with a royal sword resting across his lap. At the base of the statue, an inscription reads: 'King Taksin of Thonburi, born in B.E. 2277 (1734), passed away in B.E. 2325 (1782), aged 48 years.' Visitors frequently come here to pay respects, make wishes, and offer tributes to honor his bravery.
