History & Significance

Khao Phaeng Ma Non-Hunting Area is located at Ban Khao Phaeng Ma within the boundary of Khao Yai National Park. Situated at an altitude of 850 meters above mean sea level, this area was established as part of a forest restoration project in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX). Over the years, the reforestation efforts have successfully restored the ecosystem, turning it into a vital sanctuary for local wildlife, most notably the wild gaur population.

Highlights & What to See

The absolute highlight of visiting Khao Phaeng Ma is observing herds of wild gaurs (bison) as they come out to graze and forage in the open meadows. The most popular times for gaur watching are during the early morning from 06:00 to 08:00 and in the late afternoon from 16:00 to 18:00. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the lush green hills and witness these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.

The sanctuary is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00. For visitors who require a local guide to assist with gaur watching or wish to rent a vehicle, services can be arranged by contacting the Wang Nam Khiao Subdistrict Administrative Organization at 0 4422 8249 or the Khao Phaeng Ma Non-Hunting Area office directly at 08 1911 2945.
