แนวกำแพงเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าเกือบจัตุรัส โดยมีขนาดกว้างยาว 1,600x1,800 เมตร มีเนื้อที่ภายในเมืองประมาณ 2,000 ไร่ ปรากฏหลักฐานในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 ว่า ...เมืองสุโขทัยนี้มี 4 ประตูหลวง...และ...รอบเมืองสุโขทัยนี้ตรีบูรได้ สามพันสี่ร้อยวา ลักษณะกำแพงเมืองสุโขทัยเป็นกำแพงสามชั้น สองชั้นนอกเป็นคันดินสลัับกับคูน้ำ กำแพงชั้นในมีการทำเป็นคันดิน ก่อหุ้มด้วยศิลาแลงและอิฐ ประโยชน์ของกำแพงเมืองคือ ใช้บอกขอบเขตของเมือง ป้องกันข้าศึก และคูน้ำใช้เป็นทางระบายน้ำไม่ให้ท่วมเมือง เนื่องจากพื้นที่ลาดเอียง จึงเป็นทำเลที่ดีและมีการใช้เทคนิควิทยาการที่เหมาะสม คือใช้คันดินบังคับน้ำให้ไหลพ้นตัวเมือง
