History & Significance

Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, originally established as Mae Fang National Park, was officially declared Thailand's 97th national park on September 4, 2000. Spanning approximately 524 square kilometers (about 327,500 rai) across Fang, Mae Ai, and Chai Prakan districts in Chiang Mai Province, the park shares a 70-kilometer border with Myanmar to the west. Its highest peak, Doi Pha Hom Pok, stands at 2,285 meters (7,497 feet) above sea level, making it the second-highest mountain in Thailand, surpassed only by Doi Inthanon.

Highlights & What to See

Fang Hot Springs: Located near the park headquarters, this 10-rai geothermal area features water temperatures ranging from 90°C to 130°C. The largest hot spring pool shoots steam 40 to 50 meters into the air. Visitors can enjoy mineral baths, steam rooms, and an outdoor hot spring pool.
Doi Pha Hom Pok Peak: Part of the Daen Lao Range, the summit offers panoramic views and is shrouded in mist and cold weather year-round. It is home to rare flora and fauna, including the Impatiens phahompokens flower (first discovered here), the rare Kaiser-i-Hind butterfly, and various migratory birds.
Namtok Pong Nam Dang: A small, charming limestone waterfall located a 1.5-kilometer round-trip walk from the MF.3 protection unit. It features a small cave with dripping water and growing stalactites.
Kiu Lom Campsite: The designated camping area for those wishing to summit the peak. Camping directly on the summit is prohibited due to steep cliffs and safety concerns.

Visitor Information

The park is open daily from 08:00 to 16:00, while the Fang Hot Springs are open from 08:00 to 18:00. Admission fees are 60 THB for Thai adults (30 THB for children) and 300 THB for foreign adults (150 THB for children). Please note that the park is closed for tourism and overnight stays from July 1 to September 30 annually. Visitors planning to camp at Kiu Lom must contact the park headquarters in advance. Tents and bedding are available for rent, but campers must bring their own food and drinking water as there are no restaurants at the campsite.

How to Get There

Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park is located in Chiang Mai Province, approximately 180 kilometers from Chiang Mai city. Visitors can travel to Fang District and follow the signs to the park headquarters in Pong Nam Ron Subdistrict. Accessing the peak and Kiu Lom campsite requires a 4WD vehicle and permission from the park authorities.
