Dan Kwian Pottery Village (Ban Dan Kwian)

History & Significance

During the Ayutthaya period, the area of Dan Kwian served as an important trade route connecting Korat and the Khmer region. Local villagers originally engaged in farming along the banks of the Mun River. Over time, they learned pottery-making techniques from the Kha people, an indigenous ethnic group living along the Mekong River basin. Initially, pottery was produced solely for household utility. It later evolved into handcrafted home and garden decorations, eventually becoming an internationally exported handicraft.

Highlights & What to See

The defining feature of Dan Kwian pottery is its special local clay mixed with natural iron ore. Upon being fired, the clay develops a unique reddish-black lustrous finish known as 'bronze color'. While authentic bronze-colored earthenware has become rarer due to limited natural resources and changing trends, visitors can discover a wide variety of creations today, including traditional clay products interspersed with white clay items, garden ornaments, and decorative sculptures.

The village is open daily from 08:30 AM to 06:00 PM. Admission is free. Parking facilities are available on-site for visitors.

Dan Kwian Pottery Village is located in Chok Chai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. It can be conveniently accessed by automobile via Highway 224 (Ratchasima-Chok Chai Road).
