Wat Rong Khun (White Temple)

History & Significance

Originally a small, decaying village temple, Wat Rong Khun underwent a complete transformation beginning in 1997 under the creative vision of National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Drawing inspiration from his devotion to nation, religion, and the monarchy, the artist dedicated his life to creating a unique masterwork of Thai art. On May 5, 2014, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake centered in Mae Lao District caused significant structural damage to the temple, including cracked plaster, broken roof ornamentations, and damaged murals, leading to temporary closure for restoration.

Highlights & What to See

The temple complex features several distinct zones showcasing intricate artistic elements:

• The White Ubosot (Ordination Hall): Situated on a slight elevation, the ordination hall is reached via a long bridge symbolising the transition across the cycle of rebirth toward the realm of the Buddha. The white exterior features elaborate gable ends, mirrored glass inlay, and uniquely stylized Naga bridge rails. Inside are original murals created by Chalermchai Kositpipat.
• Ganesha Park: A striking golden building distinct from the surrounding white structures. It houses an exhibition dedicated to Lord Ganesha, with a golden pavilion set in the middle of a pond.
• Tham Sin (Cave of Art): A sculptural masterpiece that took over six years to build, featuring stalactite formations, depictions of the realm of suffering, hell, and the gate to Nirvana, accompanied by light and sound effects.
• Art Gallery & Exhibition Hall: Located outside the main temple area, these spaces display an extensive collection of paintings and artworks by Chalermchai Kositpipat.

Visitor Information

How to Get There

The temple is located at 60 Moo 1, Phahonyothin Road, Pa O Don Chai Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai 57000 (Coordinates: 19.824250, 99.763220). It sits directly along Phahonyothin Road, making it easily accessible by private vehicle, taxi, or local transport from downtown Chiang Rai.
