Wat Khun Inthapramun is an ancient temple located in Pho Thong District, Ang Thong Province, dating back to the Sukhothai period. It is famous for housing a massive 50-meter-long outdoor Reclining Buddha, one of the largest and longest reclining Buddha images in Thailand. The statue features a serene, smiling expression and sits among historic ruins, attracting worshippers and history enthusiasts alike.

History & Significance

Wat Khun Inthapramun was constructed during the Sukhothai period. The temple is steeped in local legend named after Khun Inthapramun, a revenue collector who used public tax revenues to build the impressive reclining Buddha image. According to legend, when asked by the king about the source of the funds, he refused to betray his secret and was flogged to death. In 1998, human skeletal remains bound at the hands and feet were excavated facing downward near the reclining Buddha shrine, which many local villagers believe belong to Khun Inthapramun.

Throughout history, several Thai monarchs have paid homage to the site. King Borommakot visited in 1753, followed by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1878 and 1908. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) presented royal Kathin robes here in 1973 and returned to worship in 1975.

Highlights & What to See

The primary highlight of the temple is the 50-meter-long Reclining Buddha (Phra Phuttha Saiyat), notable for its gentle smiling facial features. Originally housed inside a large viharn, the building was destroyed by fire centuries ago, leaving the grand statue outdoors. Its artistic style and dimensions are comparable to the Phra Non Chaksi reclining Buddha in Sing Buri Province, suggesting they were created around the same historical period.

Visitors can also explore the archaeological ruins of the Luang Pho Khao Viharn, where only the base, partial walls, and a Buddha statue remain. Nearby stands a shrine dedicated to Khun Inthapramun, featuring his statue alongside the excavated skeletal remains displayed in the multipurpose pavilion.

Wat Khun Inthapramun is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Admission is free of charge. Visitors should dress respectfully when visiting religious sites, covering shoulders and knees.
