History & Significance

Originally an ancient commoners' temple, Wat Chaiyo Worawihan gained profound historical and religious significance during the reign of King Rama IV. Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi) from Wat Rakhang Khositaram initiated the construction of a monumental outdoor seated Buddha statue in the meditation posture, crafted from un-gilded white plaster. In 1887 (B.E. 2430), King Rama V visited the temple to pay homage and decreed a major restoration. During the foundation work for the sheltering vihara, the original statue collapsed due to ground vibrations. King Rama V consequently commissioned a new Buddha statue modeled after Luang Pho To of Wat Kalayanamitr, measuring 8 wa and 6 inches across the lap and 11 wa, 1 sok, and 7 inches in height. The King bestowed the official name 'Phra Maha Phutthaphim' upon the statue, and its completion was marked by one of the largest celebration festivals in the history of Ang Thong.

Highlights & What to See

The temple features several key architectural and cultural highlights:

  • Phra Vihara & Phra Maha Phutthaphim: A grand, soaring vihara constructed to enshrine the gigantic Phra Maha Phutthaphim (Luang Pho To), serving as the primary spiritual focal point for pilgrims.
  • The Ubosot: Positioned in front of the vihara facing the Chao Phraya River, this ordination hall exemplifies refined Thai architectural craftsmanship.
  • Mural Paintings: The interior walls of the ubosot feature delicate murals depicting the life story of the Buddha, created by master artisans during the reign of King Rama V.
