The Giant Tree, locally known as Ton Mai Yak, is an ancient Siang or Phueng tree (a type of softwood tree) that has stood in Ban Rai District for over 400 years. This majestic tree has survived for centuries, serving as a symbol of the rich natural heritage and ecological abundance of Uthai Thani Province. It is deeply respected by the local community of Ban Sanam, who have preserved the surrounding forest for generations.

Highlights & What to See

The main highlight is the sheer scale of the Giant Tree. It features massive buttress roots (known as phuphon) that spread out widely to support its towering height. To put its size into perspective, it takes approximately 40 people holding hands with outstretched arms to fully encircle the base of the trunk. The tree is beautifully surrounded by a dense, green wild betel nut forest (Pa Mak), creating a serene and mystical atmosphere perfect for photography.

Before reaching the tree, visitors can explore the Ban Sanam Giant Tree Market (Talat Ton Mai Yak Ban Sanam). This charming community market features small stalls run by local villagers. Visitors can shop for unique local clothing, hand-woven utensils, traditional Thai desserts, local food, and dried herbs used for making refreshing herbal drinks.

The Giant Tree is open daily for visitors, and there is no admission fee. The nearby Ban Sanam Giant Tree Market is open only on Saturdays and Sundays, making the weekend the best time to visit if you want to experience the local community lifestyle and try local delicacies.

The Giant Tree is located in Ban Rai Subdistrict, Ban Rai District, Uthai Thani Province. Visitors can travel by car to Ban Rai District and follow the signs leading to Ban Sanam. The site is easily accessible, with a walking path leading through the betel nut forest directly to the giant tree.
