ตามประวัติกล่าวว่าพระเจ้ากือนาธรรมิกราช พระมหากษัตริยาธิราชของแคว้นโยนก ทรงเป็นพระโอรสของพระเจ้าผายู ซึ่งเป็นต้นราชวงศ์ "พญามังราย" เดิมทรงพระนามว่า "ท้าวตือนา" เพราะบ้านเมืองสงบร่มเย็น ข้าวปลาอุดมสมบูรณ์ เมื่อทรงขึ้นครองราชย์ทรงพระนามว่า "กือนาธรรมิกราช" โดยได้ไปครองเมืองเชียงใหม่เป็นกษัตริย์ลำดับที่ 6 ต่อมาได้เสด็จกลับมาครองเมืองเชียงแสน เมื่อทรงข้ามแม่น้ำกกมาแล้ว ได้ทรงสร้างพระพุทธรูปด้วยอิฐถือปูน ขนาดกว้าง 6 ศอก สูง 6 ศอก ในปี พ.ศ. 1928 พร้อมทั้งให้ข้าราชบริพารสร้างบ้านแปงเมือง เรียกว่า "เวียงกือนา" เมื่อวันเวลาผ่านไป มีต้นโพธิ์ขึ้นมาหุ้มองค์พระพุทธรูปเกือบทั้งองค์
