History & Significance
Koh Raet (also spelled Ko Raet or Ko Raed) has a rich history dating back over 200 years. Originally uninhabited, the island became a settlement when Chinese immigrants from Hainan Island stopped to rest and eventually established their homes here. Today, approximately 85% of the island's population consists of Thai-Chinese descendants. The island's name is derived from a local tree species called "Ton Khi Raet", while the Chinese settlers historically referred to the island as "Hee Deng".
