History & Significance
Construction of Doi Tung Royal Villa began on December 26, 1987, when the Princess Mother was 88 years old. Expressing her desire to remain in Thailand rather than travel to Switzerland, she initiated a re-afforestation effort on Doi Tung mountain. This gave rise to the Doi Tung Development Project, a joint endeavor by government agencies to rehabilitate the environment and empower local ethnic communities, including the Akha, Lahu, Shan, and Chinese Haw.
