History & Significance
Ban Singh Tha Old Town represents the historical foundation and ancient commercial center of Yasothon Province. Prior to receiving its royal designation as Mueang Yot Sun Thon during the reign of King Rama II—which eventually evolved into the name Yasothon—the area was known as Ban Singh Tha, meaning residence of the singh pier or residence of the singh posture. In past centuries, it functioned as a busy river trading post where commercial vessels operated by Chinese merchants from Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) docked to conduct business with local communities.
During the era of French regional influence, prosperous local residents engaged skilled Vietnamese artisans to construct residences and shophouses. This birthed an architectural style blending Chinese and European aesthetics, including Sino-Portuguese buildings built prior to similar structures found in Phuket, alongside traditional mud houses dating back more than 200 years.
