Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival

The Phra Pradaeng Municipality, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and network partners, is organizing the Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival for the year 2026 from April 24th to 26th, 2026, at the Phra Pradaeng District Office and surrounding areas of Phra Pradaeng Municipality. Interesting activities include the Miss Songkran and Handsome Guy contests, traditional local games (Mon Sabadance), the procession of Miss Songkran and the floral floats, bird and fish processions, and a demonstration of making the famous Phra Pradaeng Kalamae.

The Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival, formerly known as Pak Khlong Songkran Festival, is a local folk tradition that the Mon people have upheld and passed down since the reign of King Rama II of the Chakri Dynasty. According to tradition, on Songkran day, villagers dress in traditional Mon attire to make merit at various temples and release birds and fish to ward off bad luck, enhance their destiny, and bring auspiciousness to themselves and their families. At night, traditional Sabadance games are played at various homes.

UNESCO has declared Songkran in Thailand as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity on December 6, 2023. The Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival is one of the five model Songkran festivals in Thailand that the Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture, nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival is held one week after the Thai Songkran Festival. Another highlight is the procession of Miss Songkran, along with bird and fish processions organized by various agencies and villages, and the spectacular beauty of the floral floats, which the people of Phra Pradaeng have preserved and practiced annually.
