Wat Ton Son (Somdet Phra Si Mueang Thong)

History & Significance

Wat Ton Son is an ancient temple located in Talat Luang Subdistrict, Ang Thong Province. It is highly revered by the people of Ang Thong and neighboring provinces, serving as a major spiritual center. The temple is famous for enshrining "Somdet Phra Phuttha Nawalokut Thammabodi Si Mueang Thong" (commonly known as Somdet Phra Si Mueang Thong), a sacred and massive Buddha image that draws many devotees and visitors seeking blessings.

Highlights & What to See

The main highlight of Wat Ton Son is Somdet Phra Si Mueang Thong, a giant Buddha image in the subduing Mara posture. Cast in brass and covered entirely in pure gold leaf, the statue measures 6 Wa 3 Sok 9 Niw in lap width and stands 9 Wa 2 Sok 19 Niw tall. It is a magnificent sight that dominates the temple grounds.

Inside the temple, visitors can also explore several other sacred sites and structures:

• Buddha and Arahant Relics: Enshrined in a beautifully crafted Busabok (a small, spired pavilion).
• Luang Pho Dam: A Buddha image set on a Chukkachi base, resembling Somdet Phra Si Mueang Thong, flanked by his left and right chief disciples and gold umbrellas.
• Murals: Exquisite paintings decorating the interior walls of the temple.
• Shrines: The temple grounds house shrines dedicated to Sam Po Kong, Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy), Phra Phuttha Sothon, Luang Pu Thuat, Phra In (Indra), and the Phra Ket Kaew Chulamanee Chedi.
• Chao Mae Takhian Thong Sroi Suwan Shrine: A sacred shrine dedicated to a legendary spirit, believed to be over a thousand years old.
• Wang Matcha (Fish Sanctuary): Located along the Chao Phraya River embankment, where the temple raises a large number of fish, offering a peaceful spot for visitors to feed them.

Visitor Information

Wat Ton Son is open daily from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Admission is free. Visitors are advised to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, in accordance with traditional temple etiquette. Parking facilities are available on-site.

The temple is located at Moo 10, Thetsaban 10 Road, Talat Luang Subdistrict, Mueang Ang Thong District, Ang Thong Province. It is situated along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, making it easily accessible by private car or local transport within Ang Thong town.
