History & Significance

Wat Tha Sutthawas, often called Wat Tha by locals, is an ancient temple located in Bang Sadet Subdistrict, Pa Mok District, Ang Thong Province. While there is no exact record of its founding, it is estimated to have been established around 1632 (2175 B.E.) and received its consecrated boundary (Wisungkhamsima) around 1657 (2200 B.E.). Historically, this area served as a strategic military route where King Naresuan the Great led his troops across the Chao Phraya River. Today, the temple is under the royal patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Highlights & What to See

The temple features several unique attractions and historical structures:

• The Ordination Hall (Ubosot) Murals: The interior walls of the Ubosot feature exquisite murals commissioned by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, painted by her personal artists and students of the Silapacheep (Arts and Crafts) project. The murals depict the Mahajanaka Jataka, the Traibhumi (Three Worlds), rice ear patterns (the symbol of Ang Thong), the historic elephant battle, and local stories of Ang Thong and Bang Sadet. Notably, there is a personal drawing of mango fruits painted by the Princess herself.
• Royal Pavilion and Monuments: A royal pavilion is situated in the middle of a pond, flanked by the monuments of King Naresuan the Great and King Ekathotsarot.
• The Chedi: A pagoda built to exhibit ancient Buddha images and various historical artifacts.
• Court Doll Center: Located within the temple grounds, this center is a royal initiative project showcasing traditional Thai court dolls.

Visitor Information

Wat Tha Sutthawas is open daily to visitors from 08:00 to 17:00. Admission is free. Visitors are advised to dress respectfully when entering the ordination hall.

How to Get There

The temple is located in Moo 2, Bang Sadet Subdistrict, Pa Mok District, Ang Thong Province, along the scenic banks of the Chao Phraya River. Parking facilities are available on-site for visitors traveling by private car.
