Wat Suan Dok

Located in Suthep Subdistrict, about 1 kilometer from Suan Dok Gate. It was built by King Kue Na Dhammikarat of the Mangrai Dynasty and is considered an important temple of that era. According to legend, King Kue Na Dhammikarat was granted the royal garden, which was full of Payom trees, also known as the "Payom Flower Garden," to build a temple. He named the temple "Wat Buppharam," meaning "Temple of the Flower Garden." Later, it became popularly known as "Wat Suan Dok." Interesting things within the temple include the Phra Boromathat Chedi, which enshries relics brought from Sukhothai by Phra Sumonthera, featuring Lanna-Sukhothai and Sri Lankan art. Phra Chao Kha Khin, a bronze Buddha image in the meditation posture, is enshrined in the main Viharn. Phra Chao Kao Tue, a bronze Buddha image in the victory over Mara posture, crafted in Chiang Saen style by Lanna and Sukhothai artisans, is enshrined within the Ubosot. The tomb of Kruba Srivichai, the saint of Lanna, was built in 1947. The tomb of Chao Luang Chiang Mai is a place where the ashes of Northern royalty of the Na Chiang Mai family and their descendants of the Chao Chet Ton lineage are interred.
