Wat Sai

หมู่ 5

Wat Sai

Located in Moo 5, Chinamrai Subdistrict, it was originally named Wat Thayan, corrupted from the word Thai Yan. The story goes that a wandering monk found this abandoned temple and saw many banyan trees growing densely around the area, so he told the villagers to change the temple's name to Wat Sai. It is presumed to have been built during the Ayutthaya period. This temple has a special characteristic: it is a temple where the roots of a banyan tree embrace the wall of the ubosot (ordination hall) that houses the principal Buddha image. The principal Buddha image was originally called Luang Por Khao or Luang Por Thayan. Currently, it is called Luang Por Wat Sai. Locals tell that originally, the principal Buddha image was a plaster mold covered in metal sheets. Later, enemy soldiers set a fire to melt off the gold, leaving only the plaster mold inside. The head of the Buddha image was cut off, so the villagers pooled money to repair the head of the Buddha image.

เกี่ยวกับสถานที่นี้

The place where the sacred image is enshrined is an old ubosot. Villagers call it the 'Mahaut' ubosot, which is an ubosot with only one entrance. It is said that someone once intended to renovate and build a roof for the ubosot, but when they started, lightning struck, and someone dreamed that the principal Buddha image enshrined in the ubosot said not to build or modify anything. Since then, no one has dared to build a roof for it. After the head of the principal Buddha image was restored, the local villagers have jointly made merit during Songkran every year. Currently, the merit-making and water-bathing ceremony for the Buddha image is set for April 16th every year.
