Wat Phumin (Wat Phrommin)

History & Significance

Wat Phumin was established around 1596 (2139 B.E.) by Chao Chetabut Prommin, the 40th ruler of Nan, and was originally named Wat Phrommin after its founder. Over time, the name evolved into Wat Phumin. The temple underwent a major eight-year restoration between 1867 and 1875 under the reign of Chao Ananta Worarittidet, the 62nd ruler of Nan. It was during this comprehensive renovation that the famous wall murals were painted inside the hall. Wat Phumin holds great historical and cultural value, and its image was even printed on the Series 2 one-baht Thai banknote during World War II.

Highlights & What to See

The temple is celebrated for several unique artistic and architectural masterpieces:

• Chaturamuk Architecture & Naga Staircase: Believed to be the first four-porched (Chaturamuk) cruciform temple building in Thailand, its design is thought to be influenced by the Ananda Temple in Bagan, Myanmar. The structure combines the ordination hall (ubosot), assembly hall (viharn), and main stupa into one building. The northern entrance features two large Naga sculptures (Naga Sadung) supporting the structure on their backs, symbolizing the Buddha's descent from Tavatimsa Heaven. Local legend holds that couples who walk clockwise through the Naga archway three times will have their wishes fulfilled.
• Four-Faced Buddha Statues: At the center of the hall stands a pedestal with four golden Sukhothai-style Buddha statues in the Mara-Vijaya posture, facing outward toward the four cardinal doors. The statues feature Lao artistic influence in their ears and noses, and are believed to represent the four Buddhas of the current era or the four divine virtues (Brahmavihara 4).
• Famous Murals (Hoop Taem): Painted by master artist Nhan Bua Phan during the 19th-century restoration, the murals illustrate Buddhist Jataka tales, local legends, and traditional Nan lifestyle. The most famous painting is 'Pu Man Ya Man' (the Whisper of Love), depicting a Tai Lue man whispering into a woman's ear.
• Carved Teak Doors: The entrance doors on all four sides are crafted from single slabs of four-inch-thick golden teakwood, decorated with intricate floral and vine carvings by local Nan craftsmen.

Visitor Information

Wat Phumin is open to visitors daily from 08:00 to 16:00 (with general site access from 07:00 to 20:00). Admission is free of charge. As Wat Phumin is an active worship site, visitors should dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and shoes must be removed before entering the building.

The temple is located at 33 Mu 1, Pha Kong Road, Tambon Nai Wiang, Mueang Nan District, Nan Province, situated in the heart of Nan city near Wat Phra That Chang Kham Worawihan and Khuang Mueang Nan.
