Wat Phu Phanom Di

History & Significance

In 1986, the monastic community and local villagers worked together to build a large white Buddha image in the Mara-vichaya posture named Phra Si Rattana Trairat on a cliff at Phu Phanom Di. They also constructed a 245-step staircase to facilitate access for monks and devotees climbing the hill. Later in 1999, construction began on the main pagoda, creating a sacred space dedicated to Dhamma practice and religious ceremonies.

Highlights & What to See

The main highlight of the temple is the Pagoda of Billion Stones (Chedi Hin Phan Lan Kon). Standing 30 meters high with a base width of 20 meters, this concrete structure is intricately decorated with small grey and white stones handpicked by local villagers. The stones are meticulously arranged to form beautiful patterns across the exterior walls, interior ceiling, and surrounding sculptures.

Inside the pagoda, there is dedicated space for spiritual practice and ceremonies. It houses Buddha images, murals illustrating the life story of the Buddha, and statues of venerated deceased monk masters, including Luang Pu Sao, Luang Pu Mun, Luang Pu Fan, and Luang Pu Chah Suphatto.

Visitors can also ascend the 245-step staircase to view Phra Si Rattana Trairat, the grand white Buddha image overlooking the scenic surroundings.

Visitor Information

Wat Phu Phanom Di is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Admission is free. Parking facilities are available on-site.
