History & Significance

In the past, Takua Pa was a major port city and economic hub in southern Thailand. It experienced significant prosperity driven by international trade and tin mining, attracting merchants and settlers from China, India, and the Arab world. Large numbers of Chinese immigrants settled here to work in the tin mines and build homes, creating a vibrant multicultural trading port with a rich history.

The old town area is open to visitors daily with free entry. The popular walking street market takes place every Sunday evening on Sri Takua Pa Road.
