Prasat Mueang Kao

History & Significance

Prasat Mueang Kao was established as an Arophayasala, or hospital chapel, under the decree of King Jayavarman VII between B.E. 1724 and 1758 (1181–1215 CE). It was one of 102 hospital chapels built throughout the ancient Khmer Kingdom to serve as medical and religious centers for the public.

Highlights & What to See

The monument features a rectangular layout constructed primarily from laterite and sandstone. Its original architectural design included a central principal prang, a vihara, an outer enclosure wall with an entrance portal (gopura), and a sacred water pool (barai). Visitors today can view the preserved stone ruins and foundation structures of this historical compound.

Visitor Information

How to Get There

The ruins are located within the grounds of Wat Prasat Mueang Kao, Moo 1, Tambon Khorat, Sung Noen District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Visitors can reach the site using the same route that leads to Prasat Non Ku, situated approximately 1 kilometer away from Prasat Mueang Khaek.
