Phu Chi Fa National Forest Park

History & Significance

Phu Chi Fa is located in the Doi Pha Mon sub-range, a mountainous region that forms a natural border between Thailand and Laos. Historically, between 1965 and 1983, this rugged terrain served as a battlefield due to ideological conflicts between the Communist Party of Thailand and government forces. After peace and security were restored, a border road was constructed, opening the area to the public. Phu Chi Fa gained widespread recognition as a tourist destination in 1991, and the Royal Forest Department officially designated it as a forest park on February 6, 1998. The park spans approximately 58,069 rai (92.91 square kilometers) across four districts of Chiang Rai: Thoeng, Wiang Kaen, Khun Tan, and Chiang Khong.

Highlights & What to See

The absolute highlight of Phu Chi Fa is its distinctive peak, rising between 1,200 and 1,628 meters above sea level. The cliff features a sharp, finger-like projection pointing directly into the sky, which gives the mountain its name, meaning "the mountain pointing to the sky." From the grassy ridge at the summit, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the rolling hills and look down upon Ban Chiang Tong village in Laos. The most popular activity is watching the sunrise over a dense, dramatic sea of mist that fills the valley below during the early morning hours.

The park is also celebrated for its rich biodiversity. It features diverse forest ecosystems, including mixed deciduous, deciduous dipterocarp, evergreen, and pine forests. Notable flora includes wild Himalayan cherry blossoms, wild magnolias, sweet chestnuts, and various ground orchids. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot diverse fauna, including barking deer, wild boars, palm civets, big-headed turtles, and numerous bird species such as the white-rumped shama and red-whiskered bulbul.

Visitor Information

Phu Chi Fa National Forest Park does not currently charge an admission fee, making it free for all visitors. The park provides a designated campsite with basic facilities for tourists who wish to camp overnight. Many visitors choose to stay at nearby resorts at the base of the mountain and begin their hike to the summit around 5:00 AM to catch the sunrise. The climate is tropical monsoon, with a cool winter season from November to February, where temperatures can drop significantly, averaging a minimum of 7.5 degrees Celsius. How to Get There

The park is located in Tap Tao Subdistrict, Thoeng District, Chiang Rai Province, approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Doi Pha Tang. Visitors can travel by car along the mountainous border road. Parking and restroom facilities are available at the park's visitor area, from which a walking trail leads up to the summit viewpoint.
