Phantai Norasing Monument (Wat Norasing)

History & Significance

The Phantai Norasing Monument in Ang Thong Province is dedicated to Phantai Norasing, a royal steersman who served during the reign of Phra Chao Suea (King Tiger, also known as King Suriyenthrathibodi), the second monarch of the Ban Phlu Luang dynasty in the late Ayutthaya period. According to the Royal Chronicles of Siam, in the year 1704 (B.E. 2247), the king traveled on the Ekkachai royal barge for a fishing trip to Sakhon Buri. While navigating the highly winding and treacherous currents of the Khok Kham canal, Phantai Norasing was unable to steer the barge in time, causing the wooden prow (bow) to crash into a large tree branch and break off.

According to palace law, any steersman who allowed the royal barge's prow to break faced the death penalty. Although King Tiger repeatedly offered a royal pardon and even suggested beheading a clay statue in his place, Phantai Norasing insisted on being executed. He argued that bypassing the law would set a bad precedent and bring disrespect to the monarchy. Ultimately, the king reluctantly ordered his execution, establishing a shrine to house his head and the broken prow. Phantai Norasing's sacrifice remains Thailand's ultimate symbol of honesty, duty, and respect for the rule of law.

The monument is located within the peaceful grounds of Wat Norasing in Pa Mok District, Ang Thong. The main highlight is the life-sized statue of Phantai Norasing, where locals and visitors come to pay respects, offer prayers, and reflect on his legendary integrity. The site serves as an educational landmark, keeping the historical memory of his loyalty alive for younger generations.

Visitor Information

The Phantai Norasing Monument at Wat Norasing is open daily to the public from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Admission is free of charge. Visitors are advised to dress respectfully as the monument is located within a temple compound.

The monument is situated at Moo 2, Norasing Sub-district, Pa Mok District, Ang Thong Province. It is easily accessible by car, and parking facilities are available on-site for visitors.
