Mae Thi Reservoir

History & Significance

Mae Thi Reservoir was established under the royal initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) to dam the Mae Thi Creek. Construction began in 1985 (B.E. 2528) with a budget of 41,934,360 Baht. King Rama IX personally presided over the official opening ceremony on February 6, 1987 (B.E. 2530). The reservoir has a capacity of approximately 4.5 to 5 million cubic meters, supporting over 4,000 rai of agricultural land. It also serves as a rich breeding ground for various fish species, allowing local residents to fish for consumption and supplementary income.

Highlights & What to See

The reservoir features a dam crest that is 8 meters wide, 437 meters long, and 26.5 meters high, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and lush forests. Visitors can enjoy the following highlights:

• Scenic Relaxation: The lakeside area is perfect for relaxing, with local restaurants and beverage shops serving visitors by the water.
• Huai Hok Waterfall: Located about 5 kilometers deep inside the reservoir area, this beautiful 7-tier natural waterfall can be reached via a trekking trail.
• Wat Phra That Doi Wiang: Situated about 1 kilometer before reaching the reservoir, this ancient temple is believed to have been built around 1220 B.E. (777 AD) during the reign of Queen Chamthewi.
• Phra Phuttha Chalerm Siriraj: A majestic walking Buddha image standing 59 cubits high, built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Rama IX's accession to the throne.

Visitor Information

Mae Thi Reservoir is open daily from 06:00 AM to 06:00 PM. There is no admission fee to enter the reservoir area. On-site parking is available for visitors.

How to Get There

Located in Ban Thi District, the reservoir is approximately 30 kilometers from Lamphun city center and 5 kilometers from Ban Thi district office. Visitors can travel by car from Lamphun city via Highway 1147, passing the Lamphun Industrial Estate, Makhuea Chae Subdistrict, and Ban Thi Fresh Market. From there, turn left onto the Ban Thi-Doi Wiang Road and continue for about 7 kilometers to the end of the road.
