Mae Moei National Park

History & Significance

Mae Moei National Park was officially established on May 20, 1999, covering an area of approximately 115,800 rai (185.28 square kilometers) in the Mae Song Subdistrict of Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province. The park serves as a vital natural border, with the Moei River running along its western boundary for nearly 50 kilometers, separating Thailand and Myanmar. Characterized by complex mountain ranges with an average elevation of 680 meters and a peak of 1,250 meters above sea level, the park is a crucial watershed for the Mae Usu, Mae Salid Luang, and Moei rivers.

Highlights & What to See

The park boasts several remarkable natural attractions:

• Pha Thewa Waterfall: A magnificent 150-meter-high waterfall. Visitors can hike a nature trail to view the water cascading down a high cliff, creating a refreshing mist. Above the waterfall lies the Tung Ya Ninlaman (Nameless Grassland), a scenic valley where camping is permitted (visitors must bring all necessary gear and be accompanied by a park guide).
• Mae Salid Noi Waterfall: The source of the Mae Salid Noi Keko stream, featuring a 3-kilometer nature trail perfect for studying local flora.
• Chao Doi Waterfall: A medium-sized waterfall located 5 kilometers from the park headquarters and just 500 meters from the main road.
• Mae Usu Cave: A massive cave with high ceilings and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. Exploring the cave requires wading through the Mae Usu stream; however, it is inaccessible during the rainy season due to high water levels.
• Sea of Mist Viewpoints:
  • HQ Viewpoint: Located at 1,100 meters above sea level behind the headquarters, offering sunrise and sunset views (requires a 3-4 hour hike and an overnight stay).
  • Mon Kru Ba Sai & Mon Poon Suda: Situated 200 meters apart and 7 kilometers from the headquarters, perfect for morning mist and sunset views.
  • Mon Kiew Lom: The most popular viewpoint, located 14 kilometers north of the headquarters, famous for its breathtaking sunrise over the sea of mist.

Visitor Information

The park is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Admission fees are 40 THB for Thai adults (20 THB for children) and 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB for children). Accommodation options include 5 bungalows priced between 600 and 1,800 THB per night. Camping areas are available at the park headquarters (capacity: 200 people), Mon Kiew Lom (100 people), and Mon Kru Ba Sai (50 people).

How to Get There

Mae Moei National Park is located in Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province. Visitors can access the park via the Mae Salid-Mae Rameing Road. The park headquarters is the central hub for arranging guides, accommodation, and camping permits.
