Doi Sakad

History & Significance

Doi Sakad is a mountain community situated in Sakad Sub-district, Nan Province. It is home to the Lua (or Lawa) hill tribe, an indigenous group that has preserved its simple, agricultural way of life for generations. The village is highly regarded for its traditional farming practices, particularly the cultivation of local economic crops like tea, coffee, miang (pickled tea leaves), and ma-khwaen (a local Sichuan pepper-like spice).

The main highlight of Doi Sakad is its unique tea plantations. The village is famous for growing Assam tea. Unlike typical commercial plantations, the tea here is grown both from seeds and allowed to sprout naturally under the shade of large forest trees. This natural cultivation method means the tea plants do not grow in neat rows, creating a beautiful, organic landscape integrated with the surrounding forest.

Visitors can also explore the local coffee culture and stay at community-run homestays. These accommodations offer a perfect opportunity to relax, enjoy freshly brewed local coffee, and immerse oneself in the peaceful daily routines of the Lua people throughout the year.
