History & Significance
Chiang Mai Zoo was originally established as a private zoo around 1952 by Harold Mason Young, an American missionary who volunteered as a jungle survival instructor for border patrol police during the Korean War. He accumulated animals at Ban Weluwan before obtaining permission to use 60 rai of forest reserve land at the foot of Doi Suthep. The zoo officially opened to the public on April 6, 1957. On June 16, 1977, ownership was transferred to the Zoological Park Organization under the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand. The grounds also encompass Wat Ku Din Khao, an ancient historical site located within Wiang Chet Lin.
