History & Significance

According to local legends, the history of Wat Phrathat Chom Kitti dates back to 1438 BE when Phra Phutthakhosachan returned from studying Buddhism in Sri Lanka and brought 16 Buddha forehead relics. Eleven of these relics were enshrined in a chedi built on Doi Noi. Historically, the Chiang Saen chronicles record that in 2030 BE (1487 CE), Muen Chiang Song, the governor of Chiang Saen, constructed the chedi and a vihara at this site. The chedi was later renovated in 2227 BE (1684 CE) by Chao Fa Chaloem Mueang.

After Chiang Saen was captured and abandoned in 2347 BE (1804 CE), the temple fell into ruin, and the main chedi tilted precariously to the south. In 1955, the Fine Arts Department initiated a major restoration to straighten the chedi, completing the work in 1967. The temple has been visited by Thai royalty, including King Rama VII in 1926, and King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit in 1958 and 1976, the latter visit being for the sacred umbrella-raising ceremony of the chedi.

Highlights & What to See

The main highlight of the temple is the Phrathat Chom Kitti chedi, an elegant Chiang Saen-style pagoda featuring twelve-indented corners. The structure stands beautifully on the hilltop, surrounded by a peaceful courtyard. Visitors can also see the two Naga sculptures built at the southern staircase in 1995. Due to its elevated location on Doi Noi, the temple grounds offer spectacular scenic views of the surrounding landscape and the Mekong River.
