History & Significance
According to the Yonok and Chiang Saen chronicles, Wat Pa Sak was founded during the reign of King Saen Phu, the third monarch of the Mangrai Dynasty. The monarch commissioned the temple to enshrine a sacred bone relic of the Buddha (the right ankle bone or Kopphaka Dhatu). Upon its construction, 300 teak trees were planted throughout the sanctuary perimeter, giving rise to the temple's name, which literally translates to the Teak Forest Temple.
Highlights & What to See
The archaeological site features remarkable structures of early Lan Na civilization:
- The Main Prasat Chedi: A stunning five-spired stupa in remarkably intact condition. Its architecture showcases a masterful synthesis of Sukhothai, Bagan (Pagan), and Hariphunchai art styles, creating an iconic landmark unique to Chiang Saen.
- Stucco Artwork: On all four sides of the central stupa, double-tiered niches enshrine stucco Buddha images in the posture of Opening the Worlds, interspersed with delicate celestial guardian figures (Devas) and intricate ornamental stucco reliefs.
- The Ancient Viharn: Located in front of the main chedi, this rectangular assembly hall was constructed of laterite and plastered brick. It features eight plastered laterite pillars and an elevated rear platform where the principal Buddha image once presided.
