Wat Na Phra That, Pua: Ancient Temple with Rich History and Unique Architecture

Wat Na Phra That was established in 1787, during the reign of King Rama I, in Paktongchai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, about 4 km from Mueang Pak municipality. It's a significant site for the local community.

Highlights

• The Old Ubosot (Ordination Hall): Situated next to the new one, this original Ubosot features a curved base, a style known as 'Thong Sampao' or 'Thong Chang', common during the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods. Notably, its roof lacks the traditional 'chor fah', 'bai raka', and 'hang hong' decorations, resembling the 'Royal Patronage Art' of King Rama III's era. Inside, well-preserved murals depict various Jataka tales, 'Phra Bot' (standing Buddha images), veneration of the Buddha's footprint, funeral rites, and even scenes of daily life, offering a fascinating cultural insight. Though exterior murals have largely faded, some remain above the front entrance.
• The Central Water Scripture Hall (Ho Trai Klang Nam): Located in front of the old Ubosot, this elevated single-story scripture hall stands in a pond. Its central Thai house architectural style with a gable roof and 'Fa Pra Kon' walls is unique. Traditionally, scripture halls were built over water to protect ancient palm-leaf scriptures from insects like termites. A removable bridge would be used to access the hall. While no longer serving its original purpose, the exterior features faded 'Lai Rot Nam' (gilded lacquer) designs, Jataka stories, celestial beings, and 'Mae Phra Thorani' (Earth Goddess). The interior displays celestial beings and floral patterns.
• Phra That (Pagoda/Stupa): This revered monument, located in front of the old Ubosot, is central to the Paktongchai community's faith. Historically, it was built by Lao immigrants from Vientiane to serve as a community hub. The Phra That's square base and tapering upper section, resembling lotus petals, reflect the 'Bua Liam' (square lotus) style, characteristic of traditional Lao pagodas.

Wat Na Phra That hosts an annual veneration festival on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month, which offers a vibrant cultural experience. For a more tranquil visit, consider going during the dry season (November to February) when the weather is cooler and more pleasant for exploring the grounds and intricate architecture. Wear respectful attire, covering shoulders and knees, as is customary when visiting temples in Thailand. Bring a camera to capture the unique architectural details and historical murals.
