Wat Khao Chan Ngam (Wat Loet Sawat)

History & Significance

Wat Khao Chan Ngam, also known as Wat Loet Sawat, serves as a tranquil meditation retreat. Beyond its spiritual significance, the site is a major archaeological and geological attraction. The cliff faces here feature ancient red clay rock paintings estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,000 years old. These prehistoric artworks offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the ancient communities that once inhabited this region.

Highlights & What to See

The temple is situated on Khao Luean Lan, a mountain characterized by massive sandstone boulders, rock pillars, and complex pathways formed by natural rock fractures. The area is shaded by large trees and covered with lush vegetation and thick root systems wrapping around the stones, creating a mystical atmosphere.

The main highlight is the prehistoric rock art found on the cliff shelters. Painted in red, these artworks consist of 12 distinct groups. They include solid silhouettes, outlines, and line drawings of men, women, children, and animals. Notable depictions show people in various activities such as sitting, dancing, standing, and shooting bows and arrows. Additionally, the temple's ordination hall (Ubosot) houses sacred Lord Buddha's relics and relics of his disciples for visitors to pay respects.

Visitor Information

Wat Khao Chan Ngam is open daily from 08:00 AM to 06:00 PM. Admission is free. Visitors are advised to dress respectfully as it is an active meditation center. Parking is available on-site.

How to Get There

The temple is located along Mittraphap Road in Ban Loet Sawat, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Visitors can travel by private car or local transport along the main highway to reach the site.
