Wat Huay Pla Kang (Guan Yin Temple)

History & Significance

Wat Huay Pla Kang originated on a small hill that was once an abandoned site overgrown with wild grass. In November 2005, Phra Ajarn Phob Chok Tissawangso relocated to the area and initiated restoration efforts alongside the local Huay Pla Kang community. Initially established as a monastic residence, it officially achieved temple status on July 24, 2009, with Phra Ajarn Phob Chok serving as the first abbot. Over the years, with support from local devotees and international donors, it has transformed into one of Chiang Rai's most celebrated religious landmarks.

Highlights & What to See

The temple grounds feature three primary monumental structures:

• Giant Guan Yin Statue: Towering between 69 and 79 meters high (equivalent to nearly a 25-story building), this immense statue of the Bodhisattva Guan Yin sits majestically atop a hill. Visitors can take an elevator inside the structure up to the top floor to enjoy breathtaking elevated views of Chiang Rai and the temple grounds.
• Phob Chok Dhamma Chedi: A striking 9-tiered triangular pagoda surrounded by 12 smaller stupas. Built based on the abbot's vision, the pagoda blends contemporary Asian architecture with European interior decor. Each tier is roofed like a Chinese pavilion adorned with dragons, topped with a traditional Thai bell-shaped chedi and a Burmese umbrella spire. Inside, it houses a carved sandalwood statue of Guan Yin created from scented wood sourced from China, Myanmar, and India, along with wood-carved statues of Luang Pho Sothon and Somdet Phra Phuttacharn (To Brahma-rangsi).
• White Ubosot: A magnificent all-white ordination hall featuring exquisite stucco artwork, guarded by a dramatic staircase flanked by elaborate Naga sculptures. Inside sits a pristine white Buddha statue as the principal image.

Visitor Information

The temple complex is open daily from 07:00 to 21:00. The elevator inside the giant Guan Yin statue operates from 07:00 to 18:00. Admission to the temple grounds is free, while elevator rides cost 20 THB for Thai citizens and 40 THB for foreign visitors. Facilities include parking areas and restrooms.

How to Get There

Wat Huay Pla Kang is located at 553 Moo 3, Rim Kok / Mae Yao Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai. It is situated just a short drive north of central Chiang Rai City and is easily accessible by car, taxi, or local songthaew.
